Walking around town with an orang putih means you are inviting attention. Unashamedly warm welcome and interest.
Especially in an area where fair skinned, blue-eyed westerners are not a common sight.
You get voluntary explanations of how things are made, their life story. And you watch when they are offered free tasting and you are just a bridge as translator.
Jealous much?
Nah.. Doesn't bother me when I get information that wouldn't have been so forthcoming if I was alone or with people of similar skin colour.
Interesting yet disappointing at the same time that discrimination on basis of colour can be that subtle yet obvious. Yet it is a reality.
Then again.. The interest and welcome is genuine. And the pride in their own trade and culture is so evident. Which is itself beautiful.
