sometimes talking to parents can be frustrating and disappointing. but when it's good, it's so rewarding and encouraging.
my communication skills are lacking. i don't know how to be diplomatic. i don't know how to soften the message yet hammering in that thought in at the same time. i don't know how to put on a poker face hiding my frustration or disappointment or exasperation.
i emphasize the fact that it's for the child's benefit. i try not to put blame in the conversations. but i know my body language and tone of voice betrayed that thought. yet how i can i not when the issue is on the parents?
am i expecting too much from them?
i think i am. even though i don't have a right to. but i do.
experts say for a special needs child, you have to repeat the same thing at least 8000 times for them to learn it. i guess this fact applies for some parents too.
and some parents are just not as involved in their child's life as i would've liked to.
i can talk to them, ask them and beg them till the cows come home, and they'll still be detached somehow. not to say they're not good parents coz they really do care and worry and love their children. they're just not as involved.
whereas some parents are very involved almost every step of the way.
i understand it's hard on them. i understand it's a tiring journey. i understand they have other things in life they have to take care of. but i also know they're at a very crucial stage in their building their children a brighter future. it might be difficult and exhausting and frustrating now, but if they think of the future, what they're enduring now are less of an uphill task than what they'd have to face later if the foundations are not laid out nicely.
teaching the kids are rewarding when we see them move on. seeing the parents move forward and be a huge part in their children's life is even more motivating, coz we know they'll be fine.
teaching the kids are difficult enough. but influencing the parents, is even much harder.
